     Graduate Assistantships

A limited number of ½-time graduate assistantships are available through the School of Forest Resources.  These are awarded to outstanding students whom we believe can make valuable contributions to the School of Forest Resources teaching, research, and service programs.  In order to be considered for a Graduate Assistantship, your application for admission to the Master of Science in Forest Resources degree program must be received by June 1 for the fall semester or November 1 for the spring semester.  When offered, graduate assistantships provide students a stipend, renewable annually, for up to 24 months.  Renewal is contingent on satisfactory fulfillment of obligations and responsibilities as listed in the following section.  Graduate Assistants are provided further financial assistance through the waiver of tuition and certain fees.  This waiver covers only required coursework as outlined on an approved degree plan; it does not include tuition and fees for required cognate courses or courses not listed on the degree plan.  Additionally, work/study space is provided for each Graduate Assistant.

Graduate Assistant Obligations and Responsibilities

Graduate Assistants are employees of the University of Arkansas System and are held to the same level of professional conduct that other full-time employees are.  A ½-time appointment is the equivalent of 20 hours of work per week.  Examples of Graduate Assistant duties include classroom instruction, research, instructional support service, and administrative assistance.  Time sheets must be signed monthly and approved by the Graduate Assistant’s supervisor.  At the end of the graduate assistantship, a Termination Clearance Form must be completed.

Beyond the aforementioned requirements, there are additional obligations and responsibilities required to retain a graduate assistantship.  These include the following:

  1. All procedural deadlines as outlined in this handbook and the Graduate Catalog must be met.

  2. Graduate Assistants must obtain at least a 2.6 GPA for the first semester enrolled, maintain a 3.0 cumulative GPA
thereafter, and remain in good academic standing (see Grades and Academic Standing).

  3. To the extent your schedule will allow, attend most seminars sponsored by the School of Forest Resources, such as
those given by faculty, other students, candidates for positions, and other visitors.

  4. Maintain professional conduct and follow the Student Code of Conduct printed in the University Catalog.

 Registration and Course Loads

Graduate Assistants are required to be enrolled for at least 6 hrs. per regular semester and 1 hr. for each summer term.  Though tuition and certain fees are not assessed to the student, each student must validate their bill at the Cashier’s Office prior to the end of registration to avoid late fees.
