Research Interests

My interests cross a variety of academic disiplines: silviculture, forest ecology, ecophysiology and forest soils.  These interests also cover a wide range of forest communities such as upland and bottomland hardwoods and southern pines.

I am always looking for well-qualified graduate students.  Feel free to contact me with any questions concerning my research program.

M.S. ASSISTANTSHIP AVAILABLE FALL 2008

A M.S. graduate research assistantship is available beginning fall 2008 with Drs. Jamie Schuler and Lynne Thompson in the School of Forest Resources at the University of Arkansas-Monticello.  This project will examine the growth and survival of hardwood plantations established on WRP lands in southern Arkansas relative to the effects of various types of competing vegetation.  An assessment of the silvical characteristics of select woody competitors will also be performed.

The assistantship includes a $15,000/yr stipend and tuition for two years.  Additional monies are included to cover research expenses and travel.

Interested individuals should send transcripts (unofficial are fine), GRE scores, resume, and a letter of interest to Jamie Schuler at schuler@uamont.edu.  For additional information please contact Jamie Schuler or Lynne Thompson (Thompson@uamont.edu) or visit the School of Forest Resources webpage at http://www.afrc.uamont.edu/sfr/

Current Research Projects

·      Estimating belowground biomass in fast growing,   short rotation woody biomass plantations in the Lower Mississippi Alluvial Valley

·         Crop tree management in upland hardwoods

·         Fertilization in young natural hardwood stands

·         Impacts of loblolly pine seedling planting depth and location on subsoiled vertic soils

·         Hardwood seedling tolerance to various herbicides

·         Partitioning above- and belowground competition in enrichment plantings

·         Response of bottomland hardwoods to strip thinning at ages 4 and 8

·         Effects of dormant and growing season fires on the soil seedbank in mature upland hardwood forests

·         Potential productivity of short rotation bio-energy plantings in Arkansas
