FOR 4673  Forest Resource Economics

Applications of financial and economic principles to the special characteristics of forest products.  Economic analyses of forest resources and the forest industry, timber and non-timber economics, marginal analysis, valuation, taxation principles and effects, and capital theory.  Social and opportunity costs of alternative forest uses are discussed.

FOR 4711 Natural Resource Management Laboratory (Co-taught with Dr. Rick Williams)

Applications of economic and resource management decisions for forested properties considering timber and non-timber resources; forest growth and yield models; economic models; risk assessment and decision analysis and analytical techniques and computer applications in forest economics.

FOR 4XXX  Non-industrial relations (course in development, anticipated offering in Spring 2002)

Principles relating to relationship between professional foresters and non-industrial private foresters.  Course topics include relationships between consulting foresters, forest industry, government and non-government organizations and private forest landowners, various roles and tasks of professional foresters in relationship to private landowners, legal and ethical issues of the forestry profession. 

FOR 5723  Advanced Natural Resource Management

Numerical problem-solving methods such as linear programming, dynamic programming, and simulation are applied to forest management problems in timber, water, recreation, and wildlife production.

GEN 300/NRC 471 Senior Problem in Natural Resources

This "capstone" course of the natural resource conservation curriculum focuses on techniques of problem-solving through the study of a current conservation issue.  The course emphasizes problem definition, managing uncertainty and risk, conflict resolution, data collection and analysis.

FOR 425 Timber Management

An introduction to forest and timber management in a "hands-on" environment with intensive homework and laboratory assignments.  Concepts presented include economic efficiency, forest production, forest valuation, computing optimal rotation length and forest regulation techniques.

FOR 480 Integrated Forest Resource Management

In this capstone course students are presented with a management scenario in a forested location in Kentucky.  They are required to collect data, determine management objectives and develop action plans for the forest according to the owner objectives and subject to realistic legal, economic, and social constraints.  Independent work and group problem solving are emphasized.  Final management plans are presented to the faculty and to the landowner.

FOR 530 Applications of GIS in Natural Resources

An introduction to geographic information systems (GIS) and their use in a hands-on environment.  Concepts are presented in lecture, applied in laboratory exercises, and reinforced in homework assignments which include all aspects of spatial data collection, preparation, and analysis.

FOR 662 Quantitative Methods in Renewable Resource Management

An advanced course in quantitative forest management.  Numerical problem-solving methods such as linear programming, dynamic programming, and simulation are applied to forest management problems.

FOR 663 Spatial Analysis in Natural Resources

This course is designed to introduce students to geographic information systems technology through lectures and laboratory exercises.  Students will be introduced to data management concepts and will acquire an understanding of the nature and structure of spatial data, database planning and design.  Spatial analysis theory will be presented in lecture and applied in the laboratory exercises.  Sources of spatial data and the error/uncertainty component of spatial data will also be emphasized.

FR 5226 Forest Economics and Planning

Methods of conducting and interpreting economic analyses, forest planning concepts, principles and technologies of forest regulation.
