MS Assistantship

Forest Quantitative Ecology/ Silviculture

The School of Forest Resources, University of Arkansas, Monticello has a M.S. Assistantship available beginning in the summer or fall of 2007. The assistantship is half time and carries a stipend of $15,000 per year plus tuition and fees.

Project: The assistantship will work on a project evaluating the responses of loblolly pine productivity to mid-rotation fertilization and woody vegetation competition control.  Currently, this is the 5th year of the study and the student will summarize and synthesize 4-7 years of annual pine and hardwood growth responses to the individual treatments as well as a combination of the two treatments.  Impacts of herbicide and fertilizer application on hardwood vigor and mortality will also be quantified.   Research is occurring at a number of field sites in the Gulf Coastal Plain of Arkansas and Louisiana. The individual chosen for this assistantship will be involved in all phases of the project and work closely with Plum Creek Inc. liaisons.

Requirements: A 2.7 overall undergraduate GPA or 3.0 GPA in the last 60 semester hours of undergraduate courses and satisfactory GRE scores (verbal+quanitative >1000).  International applicants need a minimum TOEFL score of 550 (paper) or 213 (computer) with minimum section scores of 55 (paper) or 21 (computer).  A B.S. degree in environmental science, biology, soils, forestry or a related field is also required.

Research Facilities: The School of Forest Resources houses several modern laboratories that can be utilized by graduate students. These include the water quality/soil laboratory, Spatial Analysis Laboratory (SAL), and wildlife management laboratory. All laboratories are well equipped and utilized for research and instructional activities on a daily basis by students and faculty alike.
