Explanation of data file - SA85_24.dat

The file SA85_24.dat contains data from the stem analysis of 24 numbered trees (18 numbered, 6 buffer).  There are 5 trees from each treatment plus 4 trees from the control plots.  All measurements are in English units; diameter in inches and height in feet.

The file is set up with each tree's data in a block separated from other trees by a blank line.  The first record for each tree begins with the word TREE followed by the tree identification number or the word BUF (which indicates that the tree was taken from the buffer area of the plot), the plot number, the thinning treatment (NO means control plots), DBH, diameter at crown base, height to crown base, total tree height, the length of the first live branch (in feet), the length of the first branch 90 degrees to the previous branch (in feet), and number of sections cut from the stem.

TREE 365 39 70 09.6 06.4 36 067 10 05 10

The second record is a list of the section heights for that tree.  GL refers to ground level.

01.0 07.0 13.5 20.0 26.0 32.0 38.0 44.0 50.0 57.0

The third record is a list of ages at the pith of each section.  If an

age was not obtained for a section then it was left blank.

The records which follow contain diameter inside bark measurements at different ages

for each section measured.  The first number of each remaining record is the

age, followed by diameter measurements which correspond to the increasing

heights provided in the second record.  Consecutive records contain diameters

at age 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 24, and 27 years.

outside bark for each section.

Example:

Tree number 365 from plot 39 had a basal area treatment of 70 square feet/acre.  The DBH was 9.6 inches, diameter at crown base was 6.4 inches, height to crown base was 36 feet, total height was 67 feet, length of the first branch was 10 feet, the length of the branch 90 degrees to the first branch was 5 feet, and 10 sections were cut from the stem.  The first section was cut at a height of 1 foot, the second section at 7 feet, the third section at 13.5 feet, etc.  The age at the pith of the first section was not determined.  The age at the pith of the second section was 4years, the third section was 6 years, and the fourth section was 8 years, etc.  The section cut at 1 foot had a diameter of 0.8 inches at 3 years of age, 2.8 at 6 years, 4.0 at 9 years, 5.3 at 12 years, 6.4 at 15 years, and 9.6 at 27 years with a diameter outside bark of 10.8 inches.  The section cut at 57 feet had a diameter of 0.4 inches at 24 years, and 2.5 at 27 years with a diameter outside bark of 2.7 inches.
