MILL STUDY

Trees  thinned  in 1998 at age 40 were taken to the Weyerhaeuser mills in Arkansas to determine quantity and quality of boards as affected by pruning and thinning.  The total number of  thinned trees was 54.  Nineteen of them were numbered and 35 were taken from buffer areas. Two numbered trees with  severe defects were rejected for the mill study.  At the mills, the data were collected by David Bower of Weyerhaeuser, Inc. and Dr. David Patterson from the University of Arkansas-Monticello.  Montlog files contain information about each merchantable log obtained from the thinned trees.  The lumber files contain measurements about actual wood products obtained from each log.  Files with the *.dat extension are unformatted (ASCII) data files and are accompanied by explanatory files with the *.doc extension.
