Explanation of cluster.dat - measurements for 3 inventories (at ages 2, 3, and 4) by each cluster.

The loblolly pine seedlings that were originally planted in 1998 were obtained from the International Paper Co. nursery in Bluff City, AR.  The shortleaf pine seedlings that were originally planted in 1998 came from a nursery in Missouri that is operated by the Missouri Forest Commission.  Seedlings replanted in 1999 came from the Arkansas Forest Commission’s Baucum nursery located in Little Rock.

Units: English

Variables: 18

Columns:

1.  Site

Area One is clusters 1 thru 675 with an area of 9.33 acres for hay alleys and 3.59 acres

for the tree clusters

Area Two is clusters 676 thru 819 with an area of 1.79 acres for hay alleys and 0.77 acres

for the tree clusters

Area Three is clusters 820 thru 1230 with an area of 5.74 acres for hay alleys and 2.19

acres for the tree clusters

Area Four is clusters 1231 thru 1340 with an area of 1.52 acres for hay alleys and 0.59

acres for the tree clusters

2.  Area - amount of acreage within each site.

3.  Cluster number

4.  Age - age of trees from seed. 1-0 genetically superior seedlings were planted.  Shortleaf seedlings were obtained from a nursery in Missouri.  The loblolly pine seedlings were obtained from .  One complication is that during the first two years of this study seedlings were replanted where other seedlings had died.  Therefore cluster-level variables for age 3 may actually have some age 2 trees within their measurements, etc.

5.  Row - distance between central and adjacent tree rows (0 (no adjacent rows), 4, or 6 feet).

6.  Density - distance between crop trees and nurse trees within cluster lines (3, 6, 8, or 12

feet).

7.  Shortleaf pine thinning (shortthi)- scheduled level of thinning intensity (0 - no thinning, 1 - thinning half of the nurse trees as soon as they can be sold as long pulpwood (minimum requirement is 4" with bark at the height of 25', 2 - thinning all nurse trees as soon as they reach the size of long pulpwood.)

8.  Loblolly pine pruning (lobprune) - scheduled pruning operations are as follows:
