Application Checklists
Thank you for your
interest in graduate studies in forest resources at the
University of Arkansas - Monticello. It is recommended that
applicants have a baccalaureate degree in forestry, the wildlife
sciences, or another natural resource management discipline.
However, prospective students from other fields are also
encouraged to apply. Transcripts of all applicants will be
analyzed by the School of Forest Resources faculty to assess an
individual's need for cognate work. Applicants whose record
shows an insufficient background in forest resources will be
required to enroll in undergraduate cognate course work (and the
prerequisites to those courses). These cognate courses will not
count for credit toward a degree. All course work will be
scheduled in consultation with the student's advisory committee.
Specific requirements for regular admission, conditional
admission, and international student admission are listed below.
Application to the Graduate School and acceptance by the
University allows you to enroll in graduate courses. However, if
you are interested in pursuing a course of study leading to the
Master of Science degree in forest resources, you must also
apply to and be accepted by the School of Forest Resources.
Therefore, if you are interested in seeking a Master of Science
degree (degree track), both the
University of
Arkansas - Monticello application materials and School of
Forest Resources application materials (application [PDF],
reference form [PDF]) must be completed. If you wish only to
enroll in a few graduate courses without seeking a degree
(non-degree track), only the
University
application materials need to be completed. Below are
checklists for each application process. Applications for
admission to the Master of Science in Forest Resources degree
program must be received by June 1 in order to be considered for
a Graduate Assistantship for the fall semester. The application
deadline for the spring semester is November 1.
For degree track candidates we require two official transcripts
from each institution you previously attended. These transcripts
must be sent by the institution to the UAM Office of Admissions
Records. One will be used by that office to evaluate you for
admission to the institution. The UAM Admissions Office will
send the other official transcript to the School of Forest
Resources for our use in evaluating you for admission to the
forest resources graduate program.
Finally, international students must meet the requirements
specified by the University for international student admission.
We believe you will be pleased with the opportunities available
through our School and University. If you would like to visit
the School, or if you have any questions, please feel free to
let us know.
Regular Admission
To obtain regular admission, applicants must have a grade point
average (GPA) of 2.70 or better (on a 4.00 scale) on all course
work, or a GPA of 3.00 or better on the last 60 hours of course
work, taken prior to receipt of a baccalaureate degree from an
accredited institution of higher education. Applicants must have
completed the Graduate Record Examinations general test and been
accepted for graduate study by the School of Forest Resources
Dean and a School of Forest Resources faculty member willing to
serve as that student’s Major Advisor. Any other consideration
for regular admission must be made by individual petition to the
School of Forest Resources Dean and, where pertinent, a
recommendation from the appropriate faculty, and will be
considered on its own merits, case by case.
Conditional Admission
Students that do not meet the criteria for regular admission may
be conditionally admitted upon approval of the School of Forest
Resources faculty and dean. Students who are admitted
conditionally must earn a GPA of 3.0 or better in their initial
9 hours of graduate course work to continue graduate studies in
the program. Students are not eligible for a graduate
assistantship during conditional status.
International
Student Admission
International students must meet all criteria required by the
University of Arkansas – Monticello to be admitted with graduate
status. A minimum total score of 550 (paper-based) or 213
(computer-based) on the Test Of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)
is required, as is a minimum score of 55 (paper-based) or 21
(computer-based) on each section of the TOEFL. In addition,
international students must also have a satisfactory score on
the Graduate Record Examinations general test, and acceptance by
the School of Forest Resources Dean and a major professor.
